However, at Master\u2019s and PhD level, there are clear expectations and assumptions about scholarly competence. To understand how institutions treat citation errors in practice, we reviewed publicly available guidance and handbooks from leading US and UK universities. While policies differ, some consistent themes emerge:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/integrity.mit.edu\/handbook\/academic-integrity-mit\/what-are-consequences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">MIT Handbook<\/a>: At MIT, incorrect or incomplete citations can count as plagiarism under academic integrity rules, but there is no Institute-wide policy that assigns fixed point deductions for citation errors. Instead, individual instructors decide how (and how much) to penalise them, ranging from small mark reductions or resubmissions to failing an assignment or escalating serious cases to formal discipline.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/sites\/files\/oxford\/field\/field_document\/Academic%20good%20practice%20a%20practical%20guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Oxford University Guide<\/a>: At Oxford, if a student is found to have conducted poor academic practice (including referencing issues), their work is marked on academic merit, but up to 10% may be deducted. (This specifically includes issues like incomplete referencing or incorrect citation if it falls within poor academic practice rather than formal plagiarism).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNot all cases of plagiarism arise from a deliberate intention to cheat. Sometimes students may omit to take down citation details when taking notes, or they may be genuinely ignorant of referencing conventions. However, these excuses offer no sure protection against a charge of plagiarism. Even in cases where the plagiarism is found to have been neither intentional nor reckless, there may still be an academic penalty for poor practice.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2014 <em data-start=\"2615\" data-end=\"2658\">Academic Good Practice: A Practical Guide<\/em>, University of Oxford<\/p>\n<p>The message is clear &#8211; accuracy matters, regardless of intent.<\/p>\n<h2>How Recite helps support the student, the supervisor, and the wider University<\/h2>\n<p>Recite isn\u2019t a \u2018hack\u2019 or shortcut.
